OTTAWA - After the Canadian Coast Guard announced the de-staffing of all Canadian lightstations a few weeks ago, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Minister, Gail Shea stood up in the House of Commons this week and announced that there would be no further de-staffing until a review is completed.

Brother Kerry Williams, UCTE National Vice-President and Brother Steve Bergh, President of UCTE Local 20232 - BC Lightkeepers, met with Members of Parliament prior to Minister Shea's  announcement.  The following day, UCTE National President, Sister Christine Collins, along with Brothers Williams and Bergh met with Minister Shea to discuss the particulars of the announcement.

While this announcement is welcome, the fight is far from over.  Members and stakeholders are encouraged to continue to make their views and concerns known to Members of Parliament and to both Coast Guard and departmental officials.
